Wednesday Hodgepodge: Bye Bye May!

Linking up with Joyce @ From This Side of the Pond for the Wednesday Hodgepodge!

1. The US of A celebrated Memorial Day this past Monday. Does your family have any military ties? If so, tell us about them.  Yes, we've had family members in each branch of the service. My ancestors fought in the Revolution, the War of 1812, the Civil War, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. My husband's father was an air craft mechanic in support of special forces and to this day the family doesn't know everywhere that he went. We do know he was among the first at the Bay of Pigs. My husband's brother was a Sea Bee and my husband was a Marine.

2. Cole slaw, potato salad, baked beans, potato chips, mac and cheese, macaroni salad...your favorite BBQ side? How many of these do you make from scratch vs. buying from the deli?  Potato salad is probably my favorite side for a picnic. I don't make it, though. Either my mom makes her unique version (it has french dressing mixed in because she doesn't like mayo) or I buy Amish potato salad. I can make baked beans from scratch, but usually don't unless we're having a large crowd.

3.  I enjoyed asking this question back when the Hodgepodge was a regular thing...Lake Superior State University posts a list each year of words they think should be banished from the Queen's English for misuse, overuse, and/or general uselessness. The 2020 list includes-quid pro quo, artisanal, curated, influencer, literally, I mean, living my best life, mouthful (word used by foodies to describe texture of food in their mouth), chirp (basically an insult, you can read more on the website), jelly (short for jealous), totes (short for totally), vibe, and OK Boomer (internet response from millenial to older generation).

Of the words/phrases listed which would you most like to see 'banned'?
Influencer, jelly, and totes are my top picks. They are just annoying. I've never run into the OK Boomer thing, but that's just rude so it can go, too.

4. I'm sure next year's list will be filled with words springing out of this weird season we're all in currently. What word or phrase associated with the Corona would you be happy to hear less often?  "We're all in this together" just makes me cringe. No we aren't. Not all states have the same level of stay-at-home-ness. Not every state has the same rules for what is open or closed, what one can or cannot do. And to the celebrities sitting in their mansions by the pool with staff to do the cooking and cleaning or the politicians who travel about freely and still get haircuts...you are not in the same situation I am. Nor am I in the same situation as the unfortunate souls who have lost their businesses or jobs and have not received unemployment or stimulus checks yet, so are waiting in long lines for food.

5.  The month of May wraps up in just a few days. Bid her adieu in ten words or less.  You brought a ray of hope. Still won't miss you.

6. Insert your own random thought here.  After 2 days of sweltering heat and humidity, we are getting a bit of a break from it today. The A/C is still on, though. The pool parts should be delivered by the end of the week or the beginning of next week, but it looks like it will be a few weeks before we can get anyone to install it. Pools are in such high demand right now with everything shut down this summer because of the virus. We were lucky to find one as every place we went was sold out and didn't expect to get any until at least July! Then there would be an 8-10 week wait for installation! I had to go back to the pool store to choose a liner yesterday (only 3 of those available) and heard another problem for pool owners this year...a shortage of chemicals. It's all because manufacturing has been closed down and still is in some places. Crazy!

  1. Community pools were allowed to reopen in our state. We have a neighborhood pool which we very rarely use as we live on the lake and swim there, but my grandson enjoyed it last summer. And families with inland lots are really happy the pool is open. Now we just need some sunny weather. So.much.rain. I did pull weeds this morning though and was glad it was cloudy. That job is brutal in the sunshine.

    1. I wouldn't care about a pool if I was by a lake. Lakes are so much better! :)
I haven't pulled weeds yet. Up until now it's either been too cold, too hot, or too rainy. Maybe Friday.

    1. Today wasn't as bad as Monday and Tuesday were. I think tomorrow is going to be 82, but thunderstorms so probably humid as all get out. Yuck.

  3. Hope you can get your pool up and running soon. I agree the we're all in this together is a pain and so is a new normal.

    1. Yes, the "new normal" needs to go, too. There is nothing normal about this.

  4. High fving on #4. And yes, chemicals are in short supply, along with the toliet paper, which seems to be ok right now.

Gosh, hope your pool gets up and going BEFORE fall. sigh.

    1. We can get TP here most of the time, but it's not necessarily going to be your preferred brand.

  5. Absolutely on #4! (Wish I'd thought of that.) I've not heard of Amish potato salad ...you can bet I'll be investi-Googling that. I didn't realize Tim was a Marine! Tom's oldest grandson is at USMC boot camp right now. In recent years, he's been more than a little shiftless, so we're hoping and praying he'll come out the other side a different young man.

    1. Amish potato salad isn't everyone's cup of tea. It has dill relish in it, I think. It has that flavor anyway. It's also bright yellow.

The Marines will straighten your grandson out! Our daughter talked with the recruiters for a while and I still think a couple of years with them would have done her wonders.

  6. Hi Stacy! I agree with you on # 4. Yes we are all living through this Covid thing, but not all going through it the same way. We don't have a pool, but we have a large spa and it cools us off and the grands enjoy it. We are going to be near 95 today but no humidity.

    1. If we hadn't found a pool, we had made up our minds to get a spa. Actually, I'd love to have one, anyway. Feels so good on the sore, achy muscles and we had friends that had both and it was awesome to go from pool to spa and back to pool again. Very refreshing!

    1. I do not miss Florida in the summer. Hot and humid is definitely not my kind of weather. Yes, we answer alike a lot of the time. Probably that OH/PA upbringing!
