February Blog Daily - 20

What do you need today? (Not what do you need TO DO.) What is one way you can give yourself some extra care today?  Just some time to relax and hang out with my hubby. He worked so late most of the week and was just exhausted last night. It would be nice to just be together. As for extra care...I needed a day to work, uninterrupted on the lesson for Tuesday's Bible study (I'm teaching) and I gave that to myself today to save myself stress in the next couple of days. I turned down Megan's request for me to babysit the kids this afternoon and I ordered a pizza for supper so I didn't have to cook.

What are the most important characteristics in a friend? Do you have those qualities?

  • The "it" factor. That mystical thing that lets us recognize a kindred spirit.
  • Honesty/trust. Don't be fake and don't lie to me.
  • Loyalty. If you are talking smack about me behind my back, you're no friend. If you are letting others talk about me to you and not stopping them, you're no friend.
  • Gives as well as takes. Don't always just take from me (emotionally, spiritually, physically) without giving back something once in a while. In other words, don't use me.
  • Be available. What good is a friend who is always too busy for you?
I hope I am all of those things. I try to be. I'm sure I fail at times. Being human, we all do. But I do really try to be all of those things as best as I can.

I'm embarrassed to tell anyone this, but... if I really like a certain treat that's in the house, I've been known to hide the last bit so no one else eats it.

What are you proud of yourself for today? Why?  I went to the dentist. I really don't like going to the dentist. This appointment had already been cancelled twice before due to weather. I was kind of "secretly" hoping a foot of snow would fall, but it didn't and I went and got the appointment over with.

( I should really start calling this the Blog Every Other Day Challenge.)

What is the first thing you do every day? What's the last thing? How do these things make you feel?  The first thing is take the dog out and the last thing is take the dog out. Right now both of those things leave me feeling COLD!

February Blog Daily (Sort of) - 13, 14 & 15

Ugh. I am not doing very well at this blog daily thing. Sorry, sorry, SORRY! Sometimes life just gets busy. Or I forget. I'm getting older, you know.

Anyway, here's three days worth of catching up.

Day 13

What is something you loved doing when you were younger, but don't do any more? Why did you stop doing it?  Riding a bike and taking long walks were both favorite things when I was young. The biking...eh, the kids came along and jobs and I haven't even owned a bike in years. The walking stopped because of pain.

Day 14

How do you show others love? What do others do that makes you feel loved?  I try to be considerate of them, of their wants, needs, feelings. I try to meet some of those wants and needs. And I like to do little unexpected things or give a gift that shows I really put some thought into finding the perfect thing for them. I guess one of the things that makes me feel most loved is when someone makes time for me (and not because they want something from me). People are so busy these days that can be a rare thing.

Day 15

What is something other people think is fun that you would NEVER do? Why not? What would happen if you did?  The first thing that came to mind was snow skiing. Why? Because I'm not a fan of cold and snow and I suspect it takes way more coordination than I possess. The result would be broken bones or loss of life...and probably not just for me, but also for innocent bystanders.

What have you been most worried about lately? Is it realistic to worry about it? Is there anything you can do about it?  I'm not really much of a worrier. I get concerned about things, but I pretty much follow the Bible's teaching on worry. It won't add a single day or change anything. All it does is take a toll on a person's mental and physical health. Now, that said, what I've probably been most concerned about is our daughter's health and no, there really isn't much I can do other than watch the kids when she needs me to. (There is some news on that front, but I'll share that another time.)

Who makes you feel envious? What do they have/what are they doing that makes you feel that way? What do you think that means?  I feel a bit envious of those who do a lot of traveling or have a vacation home at the beach...and I'd suppose that means I really need a vacation! Aside from that, the last time I really, really wanted what someone else had happened when I was reading Phil Robertson's book. He talked about the ways his family lives out their faith and about how their whole faith community (church) does and it was just so far beyond anything I've experienced here even in churches. They are so open and honest, so willing to give of themselves, their time, and their money...I want that kind of community. What does it mean? I don't know, maybe I need to move to their town. Ha!

Currently & Blog Daily #8

In Latrobe...

it's partly sunny with a high of 29 predicted.

I'm reading...

Arctic Homestead by Norma Cobb and Charles W. Sasser

Thankful...

Tim went to church with me yesterday. He hasn't shown much interest in church since we went through a really rough time in one about 17 years ago. He tried going to one friends of ours were leading and he even completely refurbished the old church building they bought, but he did a slow fade on actually going to church. He wasn't jumping up and down excited yesterday, but he did say the pastor was pretty good. That's huge, people, HUGE!

Today...

I've got to pick up Tim's new prescription and bake a batch of chocolate chip cookies.

Tonight...

my Bible study group is getting together a day early and in person rather than on Zoom, because our leaders are leaving this week and won't be back until next month. We're having a soup supper and celebrating the wife's 70th birthday.

Stay tuned. I may be teaching one week while they are gone. Next week a young woman who has just grown by leaps and bounds over the last year will be teaching something the Lord has been showing her. I can't wait to see what it is. Her love of the Lord and enthusiasm is such a joy.

A thought to leave you with...

The law is susceptible to corruption by man. Follow Jesus. Always.

Saturday 9 & Days 5-6 of February Blog Daily

Saturday 9: Waiting for Tonight (1999)

Thanks as always to Sam @ Saturday 9 for the music and questions.

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) In this song, Jennifer Lopez anticipates a night of unbridled passion with the love of her life. What are you waiting for tonight? (No pressure; it doesn't have to be as thrilling as hers.)  That's good because I'm doing this on Friday night and at this point all that lies ahead of me is going to bed. Unless, of course, the folks on Ancient Aliens actually capture a real, live alien.

2) She sings that she's glad she's beyond those nights that found her tossing and turning alone in her bed. Did you enjoy restful sleep last night?  For as long as it lasted, I did. I tend to sleep very deeply, but quite often not for very long. Last night was a short one.

3) Whatever Jennifer has planned for tonight, it won't include alcohol. She never drinks liquor. What's the last adult beverage you enjoyed?  It was wine, but I don't know when it was. During the holidays.

4) Ms. Lopez performed "Waiting for Tonight" during last year's Super Bowl halftime show. Will you be watching The Big Game this weekend?  If I do it will be purely for the commercials and the halftime show. I couldn't care less who wins this year.

5) Speaking of this weekend, The Weeknd will headline the Super Bowl 2021 halftime show. Are you a fan of his?  I don't even know who he is. So I guess that means if I watch it will be solely for the commercials.

6) Super Bowl Sunday is the #1 day for guacamole consumption in the US. When did you most recently eat something with avocado in it?  We got spinach and avocado dip somewhere not too long ago, but I'm drawing a blank on where we got it from.

7) Chicken wings are a popular Super Bowl dish, too. When did you most recently eat chicken? How was it prepared?  I had it today. I had a bunch of Cracker Barrel gift cards I needed to use. My friend is leaving next week for the rest of the month and her 70th birthday will take place while she's away so we wanted a girls' day before she leaves. I had chicken and dumplings. Comfort food at its finest. She just found out she needs to be on a gluten-free diet so it was grilled catfish for her. Afterward we did some damage in the store.

8) This year, fast food chain Chipotle will run their first-ever Super Bowl ad. Do you pay closer attention to commercials during the Super Bowl?  Of course! Unless my Steelers are in the game or an artist I really like has been tabbed for the halftime show, the commercials are the only reason I watch!

9) Random question: Are you more likely to pretend to be more naive than you really are, or more sophisticated?  Neither. I am who I am.

Day 5. What is your favorite time of day?
It changes from time to time depending on what's going on in my life. Right now I am fond of mornings because I start my day with a couple hours of Bible reading and study, prayer, and journaling.

Day 6. What's one thing that you've always wanted to try, but haven't yet?
Riding in a hot air balloon.

Hey everyone! Sorry I haven't been doing too well at making the rounds this week. I thought our daughter was on the upswing, but she continues to be a physical mess. Probably the single biggest thing contributing to all of her woes is that she simply cannot sleep at night. It's probably her anxiety since she seems to sleep just fine during the day. Unfortunately, that doesn't work out with two young kids in the house so I've been keeping the kids a big chunk out of every day. I love spending the time with them, but it does exhaust me and it sure doesn't leave much time to do other things so visiting your blogs has had to move down the list. Please be patient with me!

Anyway, on to today's Blog Daily prompt...

If you had a theme song, what would it be?

Good question. I love music and I have always identified certain music with different times in my life, but one that's my theme song? I thought about Amazing Grace, Walking on Sunshine, Shake It Off, and I Will Survive but I guess that ultimately, I'll just stick with the one my blog is named for. It's a Great Day to Be Alive.

What is a common misconception people have about you? What do you wish they knew?  Wow. The only thing I can think of is that during this last election cycle all of my more liberal family members and friends seem to assume that because I supported President Trump I am racist and a whole host of other nasty things. I am not. What I am is a woman who is deeply faithful to her Lord and Savior and who does her best to follow the word of the Bible. In an increasingly complicated world I try to weigh my decisions against the rules for living Jesus set forth and that includes who I cast my vote for. I did not support everything that Trump did and I certainly wish he had stayed off Twitter or at least thought before he spoke, but when it came down to it, he was the man I felt would do more to protect Christian principles and causes and that's why I voted for him.

What are you looking forward to this month?

My husband having some vacation time to work on a project here at home and finding new things to do since I've decided to nearly abandon Facebook (not because of politics, but more on that later).

I nearly forgot. Today marks Day 1 of Blog Daily with Kwizgiver. If you'd like to join in the fun, here are the prompts.

So day 1, the highlight of my January...all in all, it wasn't a very exciting month. I guess maybe I'll say it was this past Friday evening when I got together with a few people from my Bible study for snacks and games. So much fun to do something so normal!

Moving Day

Hey everyone, I launched my new blog home today. Nothing fancy...just a little more me, I hope. Come visit me! In My Shoes
