Saturday 9: I'll Always Love My Mama (1973)

Join in the fun by clicking here.

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) This week's featured artists, The Intruders, sing that they don't know how their mama made it through the week without ever getting a good night's sleep. How did you sleep last night?  Last night? Pretty well, actually, but that's unusual.

2) The Intruders performed this song on Soul Train, a syndicated show that ran for more than 3 decades. What show do you try never to miss?  I've been kind of floundering since The Big Bang Theory ended. I'm watching lots of stuff on Netflix and Prime, but I don't really have to worry about missing those. The only thing I can think of is all the shows like Expedition Unknown, Rob Riggle, The Unexplained, etc.

3) On Soul Train, the Intruders wore solid black shirts beneath their brightly colored jackets. Black, white, khaki, navy and gray are considered neutral colors, because they go with everything. If we were to check your closet, which would we find you wear most often: black, white, khaki, navy or gray?  Black. That was never the case until I started working at the nursing home. Black was just easy to match with anything and it also hides a multitude of things that get spilled on you.

4) Especially for Mother's Day: Access Hollywood named Carol Brady of The Brady Bunch TV's #1 mom. Who is your favorite TV mom?  Mrs. Cunningham on Happy Days.

5) Mother Winters always gave Sam peppermint tea to calm her stomach. Do you have any tried-and-true home remedies to share?  I drink peppermint tea any time I feel a cold or sore throat coming on; honey is good for sore throats and such because it has antibiotic properties (got that straight from a doctor); a dab of plain toothpaste (paste not gel) or a swipe of deodorant will bring a throbbing zit to a head overnight; and slathering the bottoms of your feet with Vicks and putting on thick socks before going to bed helps with congestion (it will also leave you with really soft skin on your feet).

6) Sam's mother always tips 15% in restaurants. Sam has worked in food service and is more judgmental, tipping between 10% and 25%, depending on the quality of the service. What's your tipping policy? Are you more like Sam or her mother? How do you handle tips for carry out or delivery during this Covid-19 crisis?  My standard tip is 15%. More if the service is exemplary. Less if poor. I've only not tipped a server once and the service was ridiculously bad. I left a note telling them (politely) why I did not tip them.

7) When the tip of her shoelace becomes frayed, Sam's mother snips off the end and then paints the tip with clear nail polish. Good as new! Sam thinks that's crazy because you can just buy new laces for less than $2. Are you more frugal like mother or spendthrift like daughter?  I would buy new laces, but if it happened right now and I needed to wear those shoes before I could get to a store...I'd snip and paint. Clear nail polish will also stop a run in pantyhose in a pinch.

8) Mother Winters loves how french vanilla smells and burns her Yankee Candles all year around. Do you use scented candles or air fresheners?  I burn candles (Yankee for me, too!), but also have a couple of wax warmers and keep a can of air freshener in each bathroom.

9) Sam is celebrating Mother's Day with her mother's favorite, Hershey Bars. Would you prefer classic milk chocolate, dark chocolate or chocolate with almonds?  Well, of those I 'd pick milk chocolate, but I'd rather have the cookies and cream one.

It is COLD here today and raining/snowing/raining/sleeting....basically it's a mess. We are defying Mother Nature, however, and along with our daughter's family getting a BBQ feast from a local meat packer. We're just going to picnic inside! I hope you all find a way to have a happy day!

  1. Mrs. Cunningham is a great choice! I hope you enjoy your feast. I think in the future there will be more "local" meat producers/packers/butchers. Obviously our food chain with large mass corporations is fragile.

    1. It was delicious and I think you are right. We are fortunate to already have several local meat places in our area and folks are loyal. Since this has been going on it's not unusual to have to stand in long lines to get in. Today was no different. Even though most people called ahead and ordered for a specific time, we had to wait in line for half an hour to get to the door to pick up our order.

  2. Ohhhhhhh that feast sounds delightful!!! We went out yesterday (hubby thought it would be a good idea to get my mind off the 1st attempt of the final exam) and found that Walmart and Wegmans were basically empty shelves. Yep.

ANWAYS, same weather here and very cold too, this morning its only 20*.

    1. It was good! The kids loved their ribs and Tim was happy with his ribs and chicken. I had pulled beef and beef brisket...sooooo good. I'm saving my chicken for dinner. Yeah, it was nice to get out for a ride even though not the nicest weather. You saw the pics. We drove up into one state park and kept going till the pavement ran out and then followed the dirt roads clear to the top of the mountain and another state park and ski resort. Glad we decided to take the truck and not my car.

    1. Thank you, Deb. We've had a nice day and we're home (some of us are napping) after the BBQ. It is good to be back home snug and warm. Happy Mothers' Day to you, too!

    1. I always laughed at the FB posts that said about it, but when you get desperate...and to my surprise it really did help.

  5. I seriously need to look more closely at Netflix's offerings. Thanks for the reminder about Vicks Vap-o-Rub; I've been 'fixin to' try that for a few years now. When (as a child) I'd get a sore throat, my mother would warm me something she called "honey-milk" on the stove-top. Thanks for the memory! Keep warm!

    1. I've been watching more of Prime Video lately. I'm hooked on In the Heat of the Night and when that's done there are a couple of originals that look interesting.

    1. I almost didn't come up with anyone other than Carol Brady, but then I remembered Mrs. C. I adored her back when Happy Days was on.

    1. I think they might be lifting our warning. We've had a freeze warning for 3 days! I haven't even given a thought to buying any plants or flowers yet. Too cold.
