Saturday 9: Daddy Don't You Walk So Fast

Saturday 9: Daddy Don't You Walk So Fast (1972)
... Because it's Father's Day weekend.
Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) This song is about a little girl who runs after her daddy. When is the last time you ran? Were you trying to get somewhere in a hurry, or playing a sport?  I would guess it was sometime within the first couple years of the 21st century and I was probably playing a game or doing some activity with the church youth. I was very active in youth ministry back then.

2) This song was a top ten hit for Wayne Newton. Mr. Newton is better known for his TV work, having made more than 150 appearances since 1963. Have you ever been on TV? Or in a YouTube video? Yes, to TV. I've been in crowd shots of the Rolling Rock Races, a living Christmas experience, and the Pittsburgh Steelers' summer training camp and once I got interviewed about my feelings concerning the closing of a local mall. As far as I know, I've never been in a YouTube video and I hope to keep it that way.

3) The road leading to Las Vegas' McCarran International Airport is named Wayne Newton Blvd. in his honor. When is the last time you were at an airport? Were you flying somewhere, picking someone up, or dropping them off?  It was at Christmas and it had nothing to do with travel. I was there for dinner. Our airport has one of the best restaurants around in it.

4) Wayne says Elvis Presley haunts Las Vegas, and believes that The King of Rock and Roll has given him performing and parenting tips from beyond the grave. When did you last see Elvis? On TV, on a t-shirt, poster or magazine cover, or as a ghostly apparition?  I think I saw something about him online a few days ago, but I couldn't tell you what it was about.

5) When Sam walks with her own dad, the problem isn't that he walks fast. It's that he's always stopping to pick up litter he finds on the grass. Litterbugs are his pet peeve. What's your pet peeve?  Aggressive drivers who take chances, not only with their own lives, but with the lives of others...all for the sake of getting somewhere 5 seconds faster.

6) Sam's own father often traveled for business, and always gave her the complimentary soaps, shampoos or body lotion he got from the hotel. When she went away to college, she used her collection of little bottles and was grateful for all the money they saved her. What's something you've done recently to economize?  Well, since the whole Covid-19 thing started we've been eating out a LOT less. That's probably the biggest money saving thing we've done.

7) It was her father who taught Sam to drive. Are you a better student or teacher?  Probably a student. I don't always have a lot of patience. I might now show it on the outside, but I'm often screaming on the inside.

8) Sam's father also always asks if her car in "tip top" condition. Most recently he reminded her to test her headlights, tail lights and turn signals while the car is parked to make sure they're all working. Do you have a car maintenance tip to share?  I worry more about routine maintenance like checking/changing the oil, topping off fluids, checking the tires...that sort of thing.

9) Sam's father satisfies his afternoon sugar craving with an almost endless stream of Butter Rum Lifesavers. Do you usually enjoy a between meal snack?  No, not between meals, usually. I do like an evening snack while I'm watching TV, though. I should really do away with that.

Thanks to Crazy Sam for the questions!

  2. All the restaurants at O'Hare are on the other side of security, so you can't get to them unless you have a ticket. I think that must make it harder for waitstaff, because they likely don't get "regulars" that they see all the time.

    1. I think it would be tough. I know they recently opened up some of the stores and restaurants at Pittsburgh to the public. Funny, back in the 80's we liked going to eat and shop at the Orlando airport more than going to the mall.

  3. Enjpyed my visit, and with everything going on I thinking lack of patience and screaming on the inside is the new normal for me!

  4. Patience, patience!! Haha! I scream on the inside and sometimes in the car (I'm by myself) at the crazy drivers! What are they thinking?

    1. Oddly enough, I don't scream in the car. I'll yell at home, though.

  7. There used to be a great restaurant at our regional airport, you could watch planes take off and land while you ate.

  8. Amen to those aggressive drivers! Also, #8 … tho' I've an unreasonable fear of putting air in my tires and leave that to the pros. The LAST place I want to be is stuck on the side of some highway.

  12. Aggressive drivers is a good answer. My husband is the opposite with the vehicles - well, his truck stays dirty because it's a work truck, but he complains about my trash in the car all the time. I think the last time I cleaned it out I found 24 empty water & soda bottles.
