1. What activities did you enjoy as a kid in the summer? Well, I certainly didn't go to all the camps and such that kids go to these days (except for this summer...stupid virus). I remember taking swimming lessons (my mom recently found my Red Cross certificate and patch) and one glorious summer I took riding lessons. Mostly, though, summers back in the day meant being outside all day (with friends when we didn't live in the boonies). I rode miles and miles on my bike, hiked, explored, "built" clubhouses, joined in games of kickball and wiffle ball, played in the creek, caught lightning bugs, read huge stacks of books...
2. Did you go on vacations? Where did you go? My family wasn't really the vacation type. We went once in the summer of 1969 (I think) on a camping trip. We went first to Niagara Falls. The American side was dry, having been diverted to the Canadian side so repairs could be made. I don't remember that, or much else (I was only 5), but I do remember being on the Maid of the Mist in a terrible thunder storm. The boat was pitching back and forth, lightning was striking...it was pretty scary from my perspective! We stopped in Lancaster on the way home and I vaguely remember going to the Dutch Wonderland amusement park. The only other true family vacation we went on was the summer I was 12. We spent a week driving through New England. Literally. That's pretty much all we did. When we'd stop for the night we'd get to look around a little, but that was it. I hated it and my dad was mad at me. It was not a good week.
3.Do you have a favorite summer time dinner? Share it with us please? I can't say that I have a favorite. We just like to throw something on the grill as often as we can....burgers, chicken, pork loin, salmon, shrimp...it doesn't matter. And who doesn't love a sweet juicy watermelon and some fresh corn-on-the-cob?
4.How often do you sit outside and enjoy an iced tea or coffee? Not that often this year. We cut down the big Catalpa tree that shaded our deck last fall and without it, it's too hot to sit out there most of the time. If the pool ever gets installed, I will spend a lot of time on the deck of it.
Your answers are so interesting,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed them.
Have a good Tuesday.
Thanks, Gloria!
DeleteOh yes, we went through one summer to Lancaster County / Amish country. My son told me a story about Niagara being dry one year, I might have called him a liar liar pants on fire, now I have to go apologize lol--we don'[t live far from Niagara Falls and we also have Enhanced Drivers Licenses to cross over, well, now, thanks to Covid, the border is closed, sigh.
ReplyDeleteANYWAYS--I always enjoy your answers, smiles.
We haven't been to Lancaster in a while, but it's possible to go for a day (better for an overnight, though) and there's lots to do that has nothing to do with the Amish. I am all about the SHOPPING and the EATING! LOL
DeleteMy son-in-law can cross the border because he's a registered member of the Seneca tribe.
DeleteFun answers. Good summer memories. Have a good week!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Deb! A good week to you, as well.
DeleteWe have the same post title today lol. Loved reading about your summers. #2 reminded me of my own children, we only took one real family vacation while they were growing up. My daughter looks so miserable in ever single photo. She remembers it as a great time but she did not look happy at the time. Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteThere aren't many pictures of me on that vacation. I don't think there are many pictures at all, but I'm sure I wasn't smiling in them. LOL
DeleteExcept for the riding lessons, my summers were exactly like yours, Stacy. I'm sorry I missed this Tuesday 4. Our family did vacation during the summers on fishing trips for my dad and brother! We girls just hung out, worked on our tans and did some swimming. Mom enjoyed fishing so she went out in the boat most days, leaving me with my little sisters. It was okay. We enjoyed family times. We avoid being out in the summers here in Florida. You will find us outside sipping tea in the fall and winter! Fun questions!
ReplyDeleteI would have been out in the boat. I love to fish! Yes, I spent the 2 summers I was in Florida inside in the AC.
DeleteThat's so interesting about Niagara Falls … I had no idea! I'd love to take a leisurely road trip through New England someday … or even a cruise like y'all recently enjoyed. Unfort, there's always the dogs to consider and the health of our vehicles.
ReplyDeleteThe puppers are an issue with traveling. I have to leave Daisy with Megan this weekend and I'm sorry I have to. I know it's going to be tough for Megan with two little ones and her own dog (Daisy and Abby don't get along well) and 2 cats (Daisy barks at them nonstop) and poor Daisy isn't going to be happy, either. I just couldn't bring myself to ask my mom to keep her when I'm going to see my father...knowing how Mom feels about him.
DeleteWe built a clubhouse once. I am sure my parents were not very happy. We built it in my backyard. They let it stay at least for the summer though. I was out all day too. Josh has never once done that. Ahhhh, lightning bugs. I still love them, but I don't try to catch them anymore. I swear there aren't as many. It is so sad. Loved your answers! Have a great week.

I don't think any of the clubhouses we built were sturdy enough to last a whole summer. LOL
DeleteLoved your answers. I think the New England vacation must have been for your parents to enjoy, and not necessarily for the kids. But I bet if you went back there today you'd love it. LOL. We took our kids to Lancaster PA one summer. Some friends loaned us their van so we could camp in it, but something broke down while we were in Lancaster and we spent the day in the mechanic's shop. I fixed hot dogs in the camper van so we could eat. LOL. So much for touring the town! But we lived in Amish country in Ohio for a while, so we got to see plenty of horses and buggies clop clop clop right by our house! Hope your pool arrives soon. Sounds like a wonderful plan for the summer.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure the vacation was for them, but I'm also sure I still wouldn't enjoy it today. I like vacations filled with experiences. A solid week of doing little but staying in hotels at night and watching scenery pass by the car window isn't my idea of a vacation. We truly never stopped and did anything. You did a good job of making the best of things on your trip. I bet your kids remember it!
Deleteour childhood activities were similar... we learned how to get along as all the kids had to make their own rules of games, and entertain themselves. I mean, I NEVER would have told my parents I was bored... chores would have gotten involved.LeeAnna at not afraid of color
ReplyDeleteChores, for sure, would have been involved! My folks never hauled me all over creation to play with friends, either. You played with the kids in your neighborhood and liked it.
DeleteMaid of the mist in a storm has to take the prize as the most unique time of all! Wow. Would be a bit scary .Loved catching lightning bugs.
ReplyDeleteGiven that I was only 5, I don't know if it was really as scary as I remember it or not. I asked Mom about it once. She remembers the falls being diverted but doesn't even remember the boat ride.
DeleteThe Hubs wants to cut down some of our trees in our back yard & I'm threatening divorce - dont mess with my shade where I read ;) LOL
ReplyDeleteOur neighbors just come home from their ranch and brought us a homegrown watermelon. It was so good, we ate the whole thing. (with help from our son)
ReplyDeleteI bet your new deck will be nice with the pool. We use a lot of umbrellas for shade. When it is hot, the grands like to go in the. In fact they want to go in now. I loved riding my bike all over. I told my parents I was going to the park and they thought the local park, but I packed a lunch at went to a part a mile away. Remember putting playing cards in the spokes?
