Saturday 9: Purple Snowflakes (2018)
Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.
1) The lyrics ask where the snowflakes go. Sam can answer that: she shovels them! Do you shovel or use a snow blower? Or do you live in a warmer climate with no snow? The snowblower hasn't been working this year (my hubby hasn't had time to work on it and my stepdad just can't any more) so it's been shovel, shovel, shovel. We've been doing it again as we got our white Christmas. It has been snowing non-stop since about 10:00 pm on Christmas Eve. It's also been windy so it hasn't been able to accumulate in ridiculous amounts. Our poor family in Erie are dealing with a good 2 feet this morning!
2) This week's artist, John Legend, recalls his Christmases growing up, singing carols with his family around the piano. Do you have a piano, or any other musical instruments, in your home? No. Our son was the only musical one in the family. He can't read music, but plays drums and taught himself to play bass guitar. He also messes around with some other instruments from time to time.
3) This song is from John Legend's first Christmas album, A Legendary Christmas. It was a massive hit. Did you add any new music to your holiday collection this year? I didn't add anything to my collection but my favorite new song of the season has been Legend's "Hallelujah" with Carrie Underwood. Beautiful!
4) John and his wife Chrissy Teigen go caroling with friends. What's the last song that you sang? I really don't know. I've had Alexa playing Christmas songs every day and I was usually singing along. So...it was something Christmassy.
5) Chrissy's hobby is cooking. While she likes experimenting with new recipes, her young children prefer their familiar favorites, like mashed potatoes. She tosses a bay leaf into the water as the potatoes boil to add enhance the flavor. Do you have a dish that's considered your specialty? Maybe my meatloaf, which is just the recipe from an old edition of the Betty Crocker cookbook. It has bread crumbs, milk, egg, Worchestershire sauce, and lots of spices. I rarely measure the spices and just toss some in. I guess it works because the family always raves about it. Served with buttered noodles and a veggie it's comfort food at it's best.
6) John prefers to unwind with a good book and loves comparing reading recommendations with friends. Did you discover any books in 2020 that you'd like to recommend to our Sat 9ers? I'm sure I did, but I can't think of anything off the top of my head.
7) This song was written by Motown powerhouse Marvin Gaye. Who is your favorite Motown artist? I went through a stage in my teens when Motown was my favorite sound, period, but at the top of my list...The Temptations, The Commodores, and The Jackson 5.
8) In 1972, Marvin wrote another Christmas song, "I Want to Come Home for Christmas." He dedicated it to the troops then serving in Vietnam. Do you know anyone who is protecting us this holiday season? Tell us about him or her. Whether they are in the armed forces, the police or fire department, or the ER, we want to say thank you! Our nephew-in-law shipped out in October for Afghanistan. He is in the National Guard. We have an ER nurse in the family and several certified nurse's aides working in nursing homes. The ER nurse also works for an ambulance service and volunteers with the fire department.
9) Random question: You go into the kitchen to make your perfect sandwich. What fixings do you need? Sourdough bread, provolone cheese, tomato slices, butter, garlic, and basil. Best grilled cheese, ever!

Linking with Sam @ the Saturday 9.
I'll be over for that sandwich, smiles. I hope you had a beautiful Christmas my friend...oh and it snowed here last night and still flurrying here too. No snow blower here, we all take turns shoveling. smiles
ReplyDeleteI'd love to whip up a couple sandwiches! Christmas here was good. It finally quit snowing here. We have less than a foot...probably 5-6 inches tops. Our family in Erie reports at least 31 inches! We use my mom's snowblower but it quit working the last time Tim used it and nobody has tried to fix it since so a shoveling we go.
DeleteOh! Just reading about that meatloaf gets to me! I'm adding beef back to my diet slowly -- my Christmas dinner was a roast beef sandwich and I savored it! -- but the dinner you describe there, with noodles and (I'm imagining) buttery peas and carrots sounds like my dream come true.
ReplyDeleteI'm sending a heartfelt thumbs up to your nurses and National Guardsman.
When you're up to it, you will love the meatloaf. I'm afraid no peas and carrots here, though. I don't really like peas unless they are fresh from the garden and I'm terribly picky about cooked carrots.
DeleteI haven't made meatloaf in a while - my husband's gout limits his beef intake and he'd rather have a steak when he can have beef. My brother has my mother's old cookbooks - he's the cook in the family. I didn't realize PA received so much snow from that system! We only had a little bit, but it remains.
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure we'd pick steak over meatloaf, too, if we had to choose. I have a couple of my grandmother's cookbooks, but mostly I have my own huge collection. I love looking at them and reading them. Yes, we got a lot of snow that last time. Only 5-6 inches this time, though the family in Erie is reporting at least 31 inches!
DeleteI have my Mom's Betty Crocker cookbook from the 60s, there are a lot of great recipes in there! My hubs makes a great meatloaf...it's so tender. We always have mashed potatoes, I'm trying the buttered noodles next time!
ReplyDeleteI have a new one and an old one and I like the old one better most of the time.
DeleteYour meals sound so good! I love meatloaf and grilled cheese! Loved your answers! Have a nice weekend.

Ooooh...both together would be pretty good!
DeleteOh--that grilled cheese sounds fantastic!
ReplyDeleteYou must have the same copy of Betty Crocker's cookbook. She made her meatloaf the same way and topped it with condensed tomato soup.
ReplyDeleteThe one I use lists the soup or ketchup or bbq sauce as options, but the basic recipe doesn't call for it. My family doesn't like it with the sauce on it.
DeleteI need to look for that Betty Crocker recipe. We like meatloaf and I usually just wing it. I enjoyed your answers and (as you mentioned) agree with the Temptations!! We have watched the movie The Temptations at least six times. Love the music and the very sad story. On to 2021!
ReplyDeleteYes, on to 2021! I've never seen the movie.
DeleteYikes. When I told Terri I wasn't really into MoTown, I totally forgot about the Commodores! Lionel Richie is still one of my favorite artists. Because mine is an (extra)-cheesy version of meatloaf, I'm not going to try the InstantPot recipe my friend sent. Let me know if you'd like and I'll PM it to you.
ReplyDeleteOh, I just got an InstaPot for Christmas so do send the recipe!
DeleteNo snow in SE Georgia and I think I'm glad. Looks like a lot of work. *lol*
ReplyDeleteThe sandwich sounds so good! I could have everything but the bread. My husband makes Cloud Bread that is heavenly. That would work. Yum! :)
I've seen where they make kind of a cracker or something like it just out of cheese on Pinterest. Wonder if you could use that and just add in the tomato and garlic and basil?
DeleteThat toasted cheese sandwich sounds really good. Why don't I think of things like that? So much better than just cheese and bread. LOL. We love meatloaf here, and I never follow any recipe, just wing it. I like to add BBQ sauce to mine on top instead of ketchup or tomato sauce. I also put mustard and ketchup in the mixture with the bread, eggs, onions, garlic. If I have any sausage I might add that too. Motown makes me think of the Supremes. Of course all the others too. But they were very popular when I was a teen. Stop in the name of love!! Think it o o over. LOL. No snow here...but it's cold enough. Was 28 this morning and will be at least that or lower tomorrow!! BRRRRRR. That's too cold for Florida!
ReplyDeleteYour meatloaf sounds good to me. I don't put any kind of sauce on the top. My family doesn't like it. They'd rather just add their own ketchup after the fact. My aunt lives in Crawfordville and she said it was 27 yesterday for Christmas morning. I know it wasn't always warm even when we lived in Orlando. My parents came one Christmas and left their coats at the airport here. Turned out to be a bad choice!
DeleteYour meat loaf sounds so good! I love Motown music and grew up listening to it. I heard you got lots of snow. We don't get any here. We have to go to the mountains. I just did Sunday Stealing and posted lots of Christmas pictures.
