I know I'm changing my blogging habits, but I also told you I wasn't ruling out a meme here and there. Saturday 9 is one meme I'm not planning to give up. I always have fun traveling down the musical memory lane. Today's song is no exception. It was one of my favorites for a while back in the day.
What's Love Got to Do with It? (1984)Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.
What's Love Got to Do with It is also the title of Tina Turner's film biography, which tells of Tina's escape from her abusive, controlling husband, Ike. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Spread the word that help is available.
1) The video was shot around New York City in spring. Kids are seen jumping rope. Were you good at jump rope? Has it ever been part of your workout routine as an adult? I don't know that I was good at it, but I remember it being a big thing on the playground when I was in elementary school. I never did double dutch or anything fancy like that. Good grief, no. It's never been part of my adult workout.
2) In real life, Tina Turner played basketball for her school. Were you good at team sports? Yes. I was on both the varsity girls' basketball and softball teams. I played guard in basketball and was a pitcher in softball.
3) In the video, Tina Turner wears a little black dress topped with a denim jacket. That jacket is a fashion staple 36 years later. Do you own a denim jacket? I do. In fact, I wore it today (Friday).
3) This song was first offered to Cliff Richard, a major pop star in England who never enjoyed gained superstar status in the US. Perhaps, if he had recorded "What's Love Got to Do with It?," he would have been better known on this side of the ocean. Tell us about a time when you said "no" when "yes" might have been the better answer. I can't think of a single thing.
4) Tina's first marriage, to Ike Turner, was a painful one. Her second marriage, to German music executive Erwin Bach has been far more supportive. This has been a blessing, since Tina has had serious health problems in recent years. Do you have any medical/dental appointments scheduled? No, not right now.
5) Tina met Erwin at Heathrow Airport in 1986. He was there to help her prepare for her London performances. They immediately liked one another, but didn't become romantically involved until months later and were surprised to find themselves falling in love. Have you ever had a romantic relationship that crept on you? No. I've always known if I was interested or not right from the start.
6) The Rolling Stones' Keith Richards referred to Tina as his "favorite aunt." Is there anyone who isn't a relative of yours by blood but you refer to as aunt, uncle, brother, sister, etc.? When I was growing up, this neighborhood was like a big family. Everyone knew everyone and keeping an eye on the kids was a group effort. Back then we didn't call adults by their first name, but we knew them too well to call them Mr. or Mrs, so they became Aunt or Uncle whomever.
7) Former President George W. Bush is also a big Tina Turner fan, and has praised her for having "the most famous legs in show business." What do you believe is your best physical feature? I don't know...maybe my smile?
9) Random question: On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being "very lazy" and 10 being "very productive," what number are you? Eh, maybe a 5 or 6 for the most part...though if it's something I really care about or enjoy I can be very productive.
Back in the day I bet you could belt out some songs to Kasey Kasem's top forty. I know I did. Your neighborhood sounds like the one my mother grew up in when she was a teen in Ohio. Have a sweet weekend, Stacy. Hope you had fun at the used book sale.
ReplyDeleteI could belt them out, Zip, but nobody would want to hear it! I'm in PA so the neighborhoods probably were similar.
Delete#6 -- My neighborhood was simply not like that. Oh, everyone's parents looked out for everyone's kids. But it was ALWAYS Mr. or Mrs.! Maybe -- just maybe -- you could call someone Mr. Frank or Mrs. Rose (my best friends parents), but never Uncle Frank or Aunt Rose. We were just too straight-laced WASPY, I guess.
ReplyDeleteMy neighborhood wasn't WASPY. It was very working class. Most worked in the steel mills and most, but not all, were Polish or Hungarian. My Irish family was a big exception to the rule, but my family was one of the very first here.
DeleteI sure miss playing sports. I hurt myself 3 times while working for the post office. The first time I was in my early 20's and that messed up my lower back. Do you still have a competitive streak? Mine has calmed up a lot. Do you have anything on your denim jacket?
ReplyDeleteI'm not competitive with sports, but my streak comes out a bit when I'm playing board games. No, my jean jacket is plain. I am eying up some embellished ones in a catalog I just got, though.
DeleteCan I go with you? I would LOVE to go to a used book sale! LOL. Like I really need anymore books, but when they are "cheap", hey, why not? I hope you find some good ones. I have a denim shirt that I like to wear in the fall, and a denim vest. I do have a jacket, but I don't like it. It is too stiff and not really my style. Someone gave it to me because they didn't like it either. I think it needs to go to the thrift store. LOL. Have a blessed and fun day with your mom. I would LOVE to do something like that with my mom again. We used to go to antique stores and find some great old books together, and hats, and just have fun many years ago. She is long gone and I miss her so much. So enjoy this day with your mom and make every minute count.
ReplyDeleteThe book sale was great! I got a whole tote bag full for $5. I'll have to do a post on it next week. I wore my denim shirt with the fall appliques on it to death. The catalog I order clothes from has faux suede and microfiber shirts now that I love. I have several of them in different colors. Mom and I made a whole day of it, just so you know. Lunch, a farm market, and a rustic furniture store.
DeleteHi Stacy: Although I'm not into Saturday 9, I enjoyed your comments.
ReplyDeleteHave fun with your Mom and the used book sale.
Thanks, Gloria. We had a great day!
DeleteRegardless of trends, I've always had a denim jacket. I practically lived in mine during college!
ReplyDeleteSame here!
DeleteI found these questions really made me very judgmental about myself. I suppose it is good to look back in retrospect, but it seems in some ways it left me sad. I’m glad you were a rope jumper either.I suppose I always felt a little left out for not being able to Double Dutch that so many classmates could do.
ReplyDeleteI don't remember anyone doing Double Dutch when I was growing up. We must have been too "country" for that. lol
DeleteHope you got some great books!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Bud. I got a whole bag full!
DeleteI want to go to a book sale! I hope you find some good ones! Enjoy! Loved your answers! Have a nice weekend.

Thanks, Lori. I got a whole tote bag full of books for $5!
DeleteGood answers
ReplyDeleteStacy,
ReplyDeleteOrganized basketball or softball I did not participate in. I would play with the other kids in our neighborhood. I wasn't good at it but it was a lot of fun. After DH and I began dating, we'd shoot hoops together occasionally and then after our kids got big enough we'd shoot hoops while visiting DH's parents. It was a lot of fun. Nowadays I wouldn't be able to do that for long because my arms and shoulders couldn't take it. I can't even do yard work or heavy lifting like I once could. Growing old is for the birds! Not that I'm old or anything but you know what I mean. :) Thanks for sharing your responses. Have a good weekend!
Cathy
Growing old is definitely for the birds...or as I say, not for sissies!
DeleteIt sounds like we grew up in the same kind of neighborhood! Fun questions and I enjoyed your answers! Have fun at the book sale!! xo
ReplyDeletePA and OH...both in the rustbelt. I imagine life was (and still is) pretty similar between the two.
Delete#6 That how our neighborhood growing us was like. We would hang out together from morning to night.
ReplyDeleteSame here. I still can't adjust to the fact that I never see kids out running around in packs these days. Today's kids are missing out on so much.
DeleteWell, I've not met you in person (yet), but ya. Your smile seems to radiate. Hope the book sale was great fun!
ReplyDeleteAw, thank you, Myra! That is so sweet of you to say. The book sale and the rest of the day with Mom was fun.
DeleteI like how nice your neighborhood sounds!!
ReplyDeleteIt's not so much like that these days. Everyone is nice, but the older folks have all passed away at this point and my parents' generation is on the brink of doing that. The younger ones moving in, while nice, just don't do the neighborly thing.
DeleteI hope you enjoyed the book sale. Going back old school, eh? I don't think I ever left it. I only do Sat 9 and Sunday Stealing for memes, the rest of the time it's up to me to put up whatever I feel like. Sometimes that's just a picture, sometimes it's a thought or a commentary. Lately been doing those music videos but they take over an hour to upload on my slow internet connection so probably won't keep those up (plus I think I'm about over my video/recording phobia). Good for you for trying to shake things up.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the encouragement. I kind of lost my mojo a couple of years ago and then just fell into a habit (or rut) with the memes. I don't mind one here and there, but when it's ALL I'm doing I feel like it's a total waste of my time.
DeleteI'm still stuck on the George W Bush comment about the legs- Hilarious :) LOL
ReplyDeleteJean jackets... never go out of style!
I miss going out to yard sales and flea markets. Book sale! That's just about perfect.
ReplyDeleteI hope you had a great day.
