Saturday 9: Beautiful People

Good morning! I'm going to go ahead and play along with Crazy Sam and the gang at Saturday 9 today, but as many of you know I will be leaving soon for my long awaited meeting with my biological father. I should be at his home before lunch. I don't know if I'll be able to get around to visit all of you, but if I don't get a chance today I will catch up with you sometime tomorrow. I'll fill you in on the meeting with my father on Monday.

Here we go!

Saturday 9: Beautiful People (2019)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) This song is about the fantasy of being one of the "beautiful people," but how hollow the reality can be. Do you often find yourself envying others for what they have?

I may look at something someone has and think it's nice or that I wouldn't mind having one, but I don't really feel envy or jealous, because you don't know what someone else is dealing with. They may seem to have it all, but be dying on the inside.

2) Ed Sheeran sings that he and his girl don't fit in well because they're "just ourselves." Who among your close friends do you find it easiest to be "just yourself?"

Any of them. I've reached a point in life where I don't choose to have friends that I can't be myself with. Life is too short and too precious to deal with that.

3) The lyrics refer to Hummers and Lamborghinis. What's your dream ride?

A Ford Mustang Shelby GT

4) Ed believes in giving back. One cause he supports is No Cold Homes, which helps ensure that everyone in the English city of Bristol has the fuel needed to keep their homes safe and comfortable. Here in the United States, he's raised funds for Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Is there a cause that's near and dear to your heart?

St. Jude's Children's Hospital, Heifer International, our local homeless shelter, and anything to do with helping dementia patients and their families.

5) Ed's arms are covered in tattoos, so clearly he doesn't suffer from trypanophobia, or a fear of needles. How about you? Do you look away when the doctor gives you a shot?

Only until they break the skin, then I'm all about watching. By the way, my tattoo didn't really hurt...just stung a little.

6) One of Ed's tattoos is a bottle of Heinz Ketchup. What condiments would we find if we peeked into your refrigerator this morning?

Ketchup, yellow mustard, relish (all Heinz), mayo and Miracle Whip, stone ground brown mustard, honey mustard, 2 or 3 kinds of barbecue sauce, Worchestershire sauce, salsa, and if you count salad dressings in there...about 5 of those.

7) Ed is a natural redhead, a trait he shares with only 2% of the population. Does red hair run in your family?

Not true red, but many of us might have had auburn colored hair back when it was in its natural state.

8)  In 2019, when this song was released, the FDA recommended the approval of a drug for treating peanut allergies in children. Do you suffer from any food allergies, or sensitivities?

No, but our daughter does and it's one I've never heard of anyone else having. She can't eat poultry. She gets a constricted feeling in her chest and ends up throwing up if she eats it. We have found that she can eat organic poultry, but she's gone so long without it that she doesn't even like the taste these days.

9) Random question: What of these do you think is the biggest contributing factor to success -- hard work, luck or talent?

I'm going to go with hard work. Luck is pretty haphazard and the world is full of talented people who haven't made a success with it. I think if you have even a little bit of talent and luck, but work really hard you can do great things.

  1. There is something called "Alpha Gal" that is caused by tick bites that can cause people to have a meat allergy. It may be a preservative she's allergic to and not actually chicken. Hard to say. The testing for food allergies is not the best (at least not around here). Good luck with your meeting today. Fingers crossed for you.

  2. That's a lot of mustard! I used to be best friends with a guy who took both his mustards (yes, plural) and salad dressings *very* seriously. "The right mustard can make the sandwich," he'd say with this great solemnity, as squirting the mustard was the most serious thing he'd do all day.

  5. I forgot about salsa in my fridge. :) I can eat a jar of it just by itself.

  6. I had a poodle with poultry allergy. It was very hard to find food for him with absolutely none in it. I'm the opposite, beef and pork allergy. I learned it's mostly trouble with proteins. Now a PT I used to see, said his wife had a beef allergy but found out she can eat organic... what are we doing to our food supplies??!!

  7. AMEN to your #2!!! Thank you for what you said about helping dementia patients and their families. Until my life was impacted, I didn't give that much thought. That will shadow my outlook the rest of my days.
