Saturday 9: Lights

Ah, here's to a crazy week being over and a cool, rainy Saturday to relax, hang out at home, and catch up with online friends. What better way than to join in with Sam and the rest of the 9'ers for Saturday 9?

Saturday 9: Lights (2011)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) This song was inspired by a young Ellie Goulding's fear of the dark. What scared you when you were a kid?  I wasn't exactly crazy about the dark, the idea of ghosts and other spooks, sharks, and most especially SNAKES!

2) She thinks back to the room where her brother and sister slept and she felt safe. Did you share a room when you were growing up?  No. I was an only child and always had my own room.

3) Ellie Goulding grew up in public housing and worked her way through the University of Kent in Canterbury. Back in those days, her favorite job was theater usher because it offered her the perk of seeing plays for free. What's the most recent "freebie" you scored? (This includes a buy one/get one deal, extra points on your credit card, etc.)  The only thing that comes to mind are the antique Ball and Mason jars with zinc lids my father and his wife gave me when I saw them a couple of weeks ago. I love old things so I consider it a major score.

4) Even though today she is an international music star, Ellie still lives modestly. She describes herself as "still in university mode," and limits herself to $10/day for lunch. Where do you economize?  Everywhere I can! These are crazy times we're living in.

5) Ellie has proclaimed herself "a cat lady" and often posts pictures of her cats to her Instagram account. What's the most recent photo you took?  The grandchildren, what else?!

6) Ellie appeared on Sesame Street. She, Elmo and Abby thanked clouds for raindrops, lakes, and the water we drink. Would you be thankful for a little rain this weekend?  Sure! We are still a good bit below normal on rainfall for the year. We need it. As a matter of fact, rain is moving in later tonight (Friday) and sticking around through most of tomorrow. I'm looking forward to the return of cool weather.

7) In 2011, the year "Lights" was a hit, Prince William married Kate Middleton. Ellie not only attended the wedding, she sang Elton John's "Your Song" for the couple's first dance. Tell us a song that reminds you of a romance in your life.  Let's Hear It for the Boy from Footloose. It was the first movie my husband and I saw together at the theater.

8) Also in 2011, AT&T abandoned their attempt to buy T-Mobile. Which company is your cell phone carrier? Are you happy with them?  I switched to Boost 2 years ago and yes, I'm happy with them. They're sort of a prepaid thing, but not really. I don't have a contract, but $50/month gets me unlimited calling and data.

9) Random question: What recent experience made you feel old?  Just moving is doing that today. I guess it's the rain coming in, but man, the arthritis in all my joints and my back are aching today.

  1. Oh, "Let's Hear It for the Boy!" I remember putting on my prettiest green dress and dancing to that back in the olden days. The boy I danced with is now a grandfather!

    1. Ha! Now that's another thing that makes me feel old. The boy I danced with is now my hubby and we are grandparents. The truest thing anyone ever told me was that once I walked up to get my high school diploma and walked back down...I'd find that time would go twice as fast as it had up till then. Yep.

  3. Apparently we are all moving into that "I feel old" period. The colder weather certainly makes the bones ache, for sure.

    1. The body is definitely moving into that period, but most days the mind still feels decades younger.

  4. I'd love those jars! I've been enjoying redecorating the house and picking up interesting tidbits like your jars here and there.

    1. My dad gave quite a few to my daughter, too. She had in mind to use them for crafts. My husband and I both were like "NO!!!" and had to explain why. I will most likely use them for vases or to display things like marbles, buttons, etc.

  5. I hear you about having one's own room. Sharing a dorm room with 3 others was sure a rude awakening! Amen to economizing here there and everywhere. As we speak, I've jeans hanging to dry in the sun room. Looking forward to seeing how you decide to repurpose those jars!

  6. My joints hurt when it gets cold...especially my hips. They are not hurting yet though.

    1. My 50's haven't bothered me. I am more comfortable in my skin than I've ever been. 30 was the hardest birthday for me.

  8. *shocked face* You took pictures of the grandkids? heehee
Sorry you are aching so much. But I do hope you got some rain. If you don't want it, California needs to put out some fires and we'll take it.
Economizing is always a good thing. Plus, when you do get to treat yourself, it feels so GOOD! Have a lovely weekend.

  11. I love those old Mason Jars. I have a few. One with my hubby's grandmother's buttons. The others are in the Hoosier Cupboard. I shared a bedroom with my sister until she moved away when I was about 14. (She was 4 yrs. older) Peter and the Wolf story on a record with the book scared me. And the Wizard of Oz. Still don't care for it. LOL.
