Saturday 9: All of Me (2013)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) John Legend sings he loves his woman's "perfect imperfections." Tell us something quirky or imperfect about a loved one that you would not change.  My hubby can't carry a tune to save his life and he is well known for mangling song lyrics, but he has persisted in making up truly awful songs to amuse our kids, the nieces and nephews, and now the grandkids. As we all groan over the songs (sample lyric: "Me and Debbie Sue, we went down to the zoo to see what we could do about those pesky kangaroos.") he jokes about quitting his job to start his singing career.

2) John wrote this love song to his wife, Chrissy Teigen. The couple recently lost their baby after pregnancy complications. To whom did you most recently send a sympathy (or "thinking of you") card or message?  A high school classmate whose mother recently died.

3) While adventurous in his creative career choices, John admits his taste in food leans toward the tried and true. His favorites are chicken (rotisserie or fried), macaroni and cheese, and steamed vegetables. What's on your weekend menu?  I haven't really thought about it yet. Maybe meatloaf or city chicken?

4) When he was growing up, John's mother, Phyllis, helped support the family as a seamstress. Are you any good with a needle and thread?  Good grief, NO!

5) As a child, he was such a big fan of Andy Griffith and Matlock that he wanted to be a lawyer. If you grew up to have the same occupation as the TV character you liked best as a kid, what would you be doing?  Fixing cars. I grew up on Happy Days and the Fonz.

6)
John is a judge on The Voice. Do you watch that show? Or America's Got Talent, or American Idol?  I only watch The Voice and American Idol rarely, though I was glued to Idol the first 10 seasons or so. I do watch America's Got Talent whenever I can. I love the back stories about the contestants and there are just so many talented people!

7) In 2013, the year this song was popular, twin baby pandas were born at Zoo Atlanta. Their panda parents had been given to the US as a gift from the Chinese, with the understanding that any offspring would be given to China. So, in 2016, the panda cubs were flown to a Chinese conservation center. They had a hard time adjusting at first, confused by jet lag, unresponsive when spoken to in Chinese, unimpressed by their new diet. Have you ever found yourself similarly overwhelmed when you traveled far from home? (BTW, the pandas are doing just fine now in their permanent Chinese home.)  I can't say that I have ever felt that way. I've also never traveled outside of the U.S. except for just over the border at Niagara Falls.

8) Also in 2013, The Pope posted his first tweet. What social media platforms do you regularly use?  Facebook, Blogger, and just recently I've been trying MeWe and GraceBook.

9) Random question: Have you ever a) written something on a public wall or b) carved anything into a tree of bench?   Not that I remember, but that doesn't mean I didn't do it as a kid.

  2. Meatloaf sounds really good. We use to make it but now we buy it at our local Sprouts because it is so good! I thin I will get some on Monday. We are going to the Apple Farm today and I plan to make an apple crisp with the apples. I may have to check out Gracebook. Have a nice weekend!

  3. I don't remember ever writing on a wall either. It's just not something I would do. I was a big fan of American Idol in the beginning too. But after the original judges left, I sort of lost interest. I agree with you about America's Got Talent. The stories can break your heart or lift you up. And the people are so talented.

  5. City Chicken? I am wondering about that...since I have to work until 10--the guys are left on their own to cook. I hope you have a great day friend....oh and my husband can't sing either and he makes up the lyrics too, LOL.

    1. Oh gosh, I started at the bottom of the comment list. Drop down one and read the explanation for city chicken I gave CountryDew. So tone deaf song mangler is a Marine thing? LOL

  6. So what's the difference between a city chicken and a country chicken? That sounds like some kind of joke . . . but I don't know the answer! Wait, the city chicken wears a suit! Right? Did I get it? Love that your hubby makes up songs. That's a creative streak there.

    1. City Chicken is actually chunks of pork on wooden skewers, rolled in melted butter and bread crumbs, browned in the skillet, and then simmered in chicken broth for an hour. It sounds weird (I think it's a southwestern PA thing), but it's really good. We usually eat it with noodles with the broth spooned over it.

  7. I was, "huh?!" about City Chicken ... but now you've got my mouth watering. Wonder if I might adapt that to the Instant Pot. I used to think sewing buttons, etc. was the job for my dry cleaners. LOL.

  9. I was a very faithful Idol fan for the first 10 or so years, too. But then the changes in judges annoyed me so I stopped.

  11. Back in my college days in the early 70s in Rochester NY we had the bright idea of going to Niagara Falls and into Canada. Well that idea quickly changed as we were driving up to customs, they had pulled over a van and the long haired hippies and the Border Patrol was disassembling the van. We all looked at one anther in a van just like there's and said Naw we don't want to go to Canada.

  12. Oh, I haven't had "city chicken" since we left PA in 1956. My mother used to make it a lot, but they don't have it down here in the stores and never heard of it. I would LOVE to have some again. Do you make yours yourself, or does the butcher prepare them to buy and cook? I wish I could figure out how to do it. I tried to sew something yesterday and almost threw my machine out the door. I don't have the patience for it anymore. It's a cheap Singer portable machine, and I've never been able to make it work right. Not sure what I am doing wrong. It's just not something I enjoy anymore. Okay, I enjoyed this. Now, help me find a way to make some city chicken. LOL

  14. City Chicken? Do tell!
Only one other person sews besides me? Did jr high not offer classes?
I was four when I put a sewing machine needle through my finger at the nail. So it was teach me or I'd try it again.
Your hubby sounds like a very cute, very BIG songbird. Grandchildren are a great joy. I'm happy that you have them so near to you. Have a lovely week, Stacy.
