Saturday 9: Walking on Broken Glass

Saturday 9: Walking on Broken Glass (1992)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1. Annie sings that she feels she walking on broken glass. What's the most recent item you broke?  I dropped a glass loaf pan the other day. I thought I caught it with nothing more than a slight knock off the counter, but when I looked at it, it had cracked the whole way down the side.

2. She sings about being cut until she bleeds. Tell us about a time you needed stitches.  I've never needed stitches.

3. This week's featured artist, Annie Lennox, was born on Christmas Day. Do you know anyone whose birthday falls on a holiday.  Our oldest granddaughter missed Christmas Day by one day. If my grandmother were still alive her birthday would be on Thanksgiving. Besides that, I know one young man who was born on July 4th and we had friends a long time ago who got married on New Year's Day and their son was born a year later...on New Year's Day.

4. When Annie met Dave Stewart, with whom she'd form the duo The Eurythmics, she was living in Australia and staying in a tiny apartment called a bedsit. The occupant has his/her own combination bedroom/livingroom with cooking facilities, but must share a bathroom. Tell us about one of your early apartments.  As an adult I've never lived in an apartment.

5. After the Eurythmics broke up, Annie went out on her own. Would you rather work independently or as part of a group?  I think it would depend on what the work was. Somethings I would much rather do alone, but there are times it's helpful to be part of a team.

6. Among her many honors, Annie Lennox was named chancellor of Scotland's Glasgow Calledonia University. What's the last college campus you visited? What brought you there?  I think (it's been a very long time) it was the college in here in town, St. Vincent's, and I was there for a summer theater production.

7. In 1992, the year this song was recorded, compact discs outsold cassette tapes for the first time. Back in the day, did you enjoy making your own mix tapes?  I did. I made a lot of them. It was a real pain trying to keep everyone and everything quiet while you did it. It was the best thing ever when I got my first stereo that could record from one medium to another without having to worry about outside noise.

8. Also in 1992, Johnny Carson made his last appearance as host of The Tonight Show. The catchphrase "Here's Johnny!" was associated with the show. Can you think of another popular TV catchphrase?  Sure.

  • "What you talkin' about, Willis?
  • "H-eeeeeeyyyy" and "Sit on it!"
  • "Did I do that?"
  • "Book'em, Danno"
  • "Dy-no-mite!"
9. Random question: Think of your past week. Now look ahead to the coming week. Would you like it to be more, or less, exciting?  I don't know about exciting, but I'd sure like it to be different. Our daughter got tested for Covid on Monday. Her husband is at home because his work doesn't allow him to come back until they both test negative. I have been staying very close to home until we hear her results. As of this time (Friday night) she still hasn't heard. And at this point, I'd love next week to just be normal. For all of us to be able to have Thanksgiving with our families and friends. Life has come to where "normal" is the fantasy.

Linked today with Sam for Saturday 9.

  2. I can't get over the fact that you NEVER had stitches! One summer, my parents took me to the ER so many times (fell off the lifeguard's chair, which I shouldn't have been climbing on; sliced my finger with the electric can opener, which I wasn't supposed to touch; gashed my chin while jumping on my bed ...) that the authorities suspected abuse. The way I described the last incident sounded made up to them ("I missed the bed"). I could have said that as I landed on my bed, I slipped and cracked my chin on the headboard, but hey, I was 9 and wasn't especially artful with my language. Anyway, I think I received your quota of stitches.

I hope that come Thursday, you'll be able to include your daughter's Covid test as something you're thankful for.

    1. Thank you. Today is day five of the promised 3-5 day wait for results and...nothing. I suppose we will hear on Monday at this point. I have a feeling our youngest granddaughter is going to be a lot like you. She hasn't needed stiches yet, but she has taken some pretty hard knocks to the head and one spill where I witnessed her little neck twist in a way no human neck should go but she is a resilient little thing. Thank goodness!

  3. Hope your family is clear of the Covid!
    I enjoyed your answers Stacy.
Have a great Saturday my friend.

  4. You never had stitches? WOW. Keeping your daughter and family in prayer, please keep us updated. Our sheriff and local police chief out statements that they will not be enforcing Cuomo's latest mandates about Thanksgiving regardless of us being in the yellow/orange stage. I better leave it at that, smiles.

    1. Nope. No stitches and no "official" broken bones. I'm pretty sure I've broken a toe or two, though. Yeah, Levine is telling us to do all this stuff, but then admits it won't be enforced (although she was quick to say she has the power to do that if she wanted to). I saw something today that said Biden has tapped her to advise under him. Don't know if that's true or not.

  5. I do hope that the Covid tests are negative.

I drew such a blank on the catchphrases--but of course, now I can think of tons of them!

  6. You're the second one who didn't life in an apartment.
"Book'em, Danno" I remember that show, the new 50 was not upto the standard of the original.

    1. I liked the first 5-0, but admit to liking the second one just as much...maybe even a smidge better. I binge watched the first 5 or 6 seasons a couple of winters ago when the weather was bad and schools were closed every time I turned around (still driving the bus at the time). It was nice to escape to sunny, beautiful Hawaii.

  8. What a test of patience, y'all! If one or both test positive, I guess that means 4 more weeks isolation? Still praying, friend!

    1. I think if they test positive they could be tested again the week after Thanksgiving because that would be 14 days. I'm not super clear on how it all works and even if I was, they'd probably change the dang rules tomorrow.

  9. I can't believe they haven't given her an answer on the results yet! That is crazy! By the time she finds out hopefully she'll be over it if she had it. I do hope that Thanksgiving will be a time of blessing and somewhat "normal" for you and all of us. I know it will be different, but I pray we can all make the most of what we CAN do and just be very thankful.

    1. I know. Today is day 5 of the 3-5 days until results, but being that it's Saturday I suppose they won't say until Monday. Or they are so overwhelmed (as we hear on the news they are) that there's no telling when we'll know. Oh yes, Thanksgiving will still be a time of blessing, even if we are all alone in our separate homes. As the Bard or someone said, "This, too, shall pass." And we will survive and one day enjoy looking back and telling the stories.
