The Times Square ball first dropped on December 31, 1907. It is 12 feet in diameter and covered with Swarovski crystals.
1. Despite the weirdness of this past year, was it still a good year for you anyway or not? Yes, there was more good than bad. I left a job that where I loved what I did, but circumstances were making me more and more miserable. Covid kept me at home for a lot of the year, but that meant plenty of time to spend with our littlest grands who live next door. We put in a swimming pool. I spent a lot of time studying the Bible, praying and growing closer to the Lord ("funny" how He worked things out since my word for 2020 was Abide). And of course, the big thing, no the HUGE thing for 2020 was that at the age of 55 I met my biological father for the first time. We have seen each other a couple of times and we write. We are developing a relationship. I have also gotten to know my half-sister and one of my half-brothers.
2. How will you spend New Years Eve? We are still under the renewed lockdown orders so we will be here at home and since Tim has to work that day, he will be asleep long before midnight, I'm sure.
3. What do you do on New Year's Day? Is football part of the agenda? Mom hasn't said anything yet, but most years we go to her house for pork and sauerkraut. Sometimes we watch the Rose Parade, but I haven't heard if that is even happening this year. I know the game is being played in Texas because of Covid. Tim's dad didn't watch football or any sports on TV and Tim grew up to be just like him. He likes to watch movies or the history channel (really, he naps!). I usually spend the rest of the day after dinner taking down the Christmas decorations, but this year since it's a Friday I'm having Tim bring in the boxes and I'll pack it all away on Saturday.
4. It's a Scottish tradition to kiss at midnight. Do you keep that tradition? Does everyone get a kiss if you do? Yes, we keep that tradition. Even if Tim is asleep, I wake him up for that. Kiss everyone? It totally depends on who we are with. Usually, just family gets a kiss and everyone else gets a hug. I'm guessing nobody extra is getting a kiss this year...Covid, you know. We always call our kids or parents at midnight and wish them a Happy New Year if we aren't with them. The older generations in my family always put money outside in a bush before midnight and then brought it in afterward for financial luck in the new year. I haven't kept up with that very often. I like the tradition I read about yesterday better, that of opening the door to let the old year out and the new year in. I don't believe in any of the old superstitions, but those little things are part of the traditions and are fun.
Linked up to the Tuesday 4.
The Rose Parade has been cancelled. They cancelled it back in July. I imagine people start working on those massive floats about then. It is the first time in 75 years that it has been cancelled.
ReplyDeleteHi Stacy. No football for us either - my dad was a "football nut" (said lovingly) so I vowed NOT to marry someone who had to watch every game. Charly is not a sports guy at all, and like Tim, he much prefers a movie or the history channel, and so do I. New Year's in pretty much a non-event for us. We are not partiers and never have been. We will probably be in bed before midnight, but all the fireworks and poppers going off will wake us up. Hope you and yours have a Happy New Year! I am so glad to call you a friend and appreciate all the virtual chats and emails we have shared back and forth about the challenges we have in common! Take care, my friend!
ReplyDeletePork and sauerkraut all the way! lol Although I don't like sauerkraut, it just wouldn't seem like New Year's without it :)

That is so cool how God worked that out to give you so much extra time to abide in Him. I also like that tradition of opening the door and letting out the old and the new in...never heard of that, but may have to try it this year for fun. We used to let the girls go out in the front porch or yard and scream as loud as they could Happy New Year. I'm thinking I maybe enjoyed that release more than they did even. lol
ReplyDeleteI am going to miss the parade, it is my favorite one. It amazes me how parts of the country are under lockdown and here where I live in Missouri, we are not under a lockdown and haven't been since the country was locked down in April. We have mask mandates, but that is all. Happy New Year! Loved your answers! Have a nice week.

I'd never heard those traditions, but what the hey. I'm all about courting good luck in whatever form. And maybe THIS year will be the first I can talk my hubby into tasting black-eyed peas. We've not discussed a menu, but pork and sauerkraut sounds really good. I'm going to look see if that's something I can put in the Instant Pot.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your answers today.
ReplyDeleteWe will watch football on New Year's Day.
Wishing you and your family a great New Year!
There will be a 2 hour special Rose Parade presentation that will benefit Feeding America. tournamentofroses.com My hubby is not a sports guy and likes to watch tv specials, food, history and travel channel. I will be starting my new planner and Bible reading program. Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of the money thing, or of the opening the door tradition. Interesting. We DO kiss, but only those related! LOL Looking forward to a better 2021 for all of us!! We are doing pork and kraut on Friday, too!
ReplyDeleteWe watch football every New Year's Day. I was always the sole female and was outnumbered until the DIL's came into the family, so by necessity I learned to watch and appreciate the game.
ReplyDeleteI love anything with sauerkraut! Save me a place at that table!
ReplyDeleteI would love to have pork and sauerkraut too, but the southern tradition is black eyed peas and hog jowl. I've never had hog jowl...we usually have ham or a pull pork. I could add the sauerkraut to that, just keep the black eyed peas separate of course. We'll see. Football is always on here with a mostly male house. My sister will be here this year, so we will entertain ourselves. I hope you have a happy New Year!!
ReplyDeleteI have to be back at work New Years Day at 7 am--so no staying up for anything. Wishing you both a very Happy New Year. smiles
