1. Let's pretend that it is 50 years into the future, and explorers have just discovered your house, "frozen in time" exactly as it is today. Everything is preserved, even the food, but of course no one has lived there for fifty years. What do you think would be their first reaction as they walk in the door of your house? "Wow, there is a lot of stuff in here!" Or possibly..."Orange? Who in the world paints their living room walls orange??"
2. What would the things left in your house tell the explorers about you? That we loved God, family, and our country. No doubt about that!
3. What kinds of books would they discover on your bookshelves or beside your chair/bed? Lots of Christian books, lots of Bibles, lots of Bible studies, lots of biographies, quite a few reference books, complete collections of my favorite authors (Janet Evanovich, James Rollins, Craig Johnson, and William Kent Krueger), plus stacks of a wide variety of books picked up at used book sales, thrift stores, and yard sales.
4. What things would they discover in your closets or cabinets that would make them wonder why on earth you were saving it? I don't think I have anything in my closets that falls into that category. Storage space is valuable real estate in this house so I'm pretty selective. If it doesn't have major sentimental value or actually get used, I will get rid of it on one of my annual purges. My mom would be horrified, but I even donated my high school letter jacket after she kept it for 30 years or so before giving it to me.

Hi Stacy, I would say we are similar in several things except for #4. I have been going through things to downsize, but it is a slow go because I would rather craft and work on my Bible studies! And like you, spend time with the grands!

DeleteYou donated your high school letter jacket???? Oh dear...mine is wrapped in a bag in my bottom drawer of my dresser. No one else would want it, and I get it out and wear it to our class reunions when we have them...which I don't know how many more we will have since we are getting so OLD! LOL. ReplyDeleteYes, ma'am, I did. It doesn't come close to fitting for one thing and even if it did, I've been to exactly one class reunion and I don't plan on going to any more. The last one was 9 years ago when so many of us were fairly new to Facebook and chatting all the time to catch up. We decided to have a reunion. Out of a class of 365, or so, there were only about 35 people at the reunion and that included spouses! No one wants to come to them and most of them said so! I think my generation is the first to be so connected on social media and we keep up that way. There is just very little interest in reunions.
Delete#1 - Mine would be, "WHO in their RIGHT MIND would paint their living room walls red and green!?" It looks like the Christmas Elf lives here. LOL I like colors. To me white walls are so bland.

That's it, exactly! My mom always painted everything white. Blah. Give me color! Our house is small, too, so that's why the purges...but I still have too much stuff that falls under "sentimental value."

DeleteOkay, I LOL'd about the orange wall. When we first moved to the Phoenix metro and were looking at homes to rent, we picked the one with the den painted orange. It looked so warm and cozy, there was no doubt.

ReplyDeleteAfter spending about 7 months cleaning my mom's house out of everything near, dear, special, needed or not, I am going to go through my house with a fine tooth comb and get rid of everything that serves no function or is not needed (except for sets of dishes and china and anything else I can't part with)
