Good morning and happy hump day! Wednesday means, in the words of Jon Bon Jovi, that "we're halfway there!"
(*Pause for gratuitous musical interlude*)
CURRENTLY...
The Weather
It's a comfortable, though humid, 72 degrees and raining. Tropical storm Fred is making himself known in the keystone state today. Temperatures will top out at 75 degrees and the rain is expected to be constant with some heavy downpours, bringing us a total of 2-3 inches when all is said and done.
Celebrating
Nothing. Last night finished up my birthday celebrations. My Bible study group got together, but didn't study. Everyone brought some kind of food and we had a good time talking and hanging out. We had meant to play a game, but just enjoyed sitting out on our teacher's deck overlooking the lake and gazing up at the stars while chatting. They also blessed me with several gifts.
By the way, my birthday on Sunday was good. Rebels that we are, Tim and I drove to Columbiana, OH...yep, we crossed state lines and we took no masks...for the Shaker Woods Craft Festival. It's totally not Tim's kind of thing but he put up with it for my birthday, following me all around and lugging the things I bought without any complaints. When we got through the festival, we headed over to Boardman, OH for dinner at the Springfield Grille. We had stuffed shrimp, baked potatoes, and asparagus. YUM!
It was only one day, but man, it felt good to get out of town and away from home for a little bit!
Forgiving What You Can't Forget is still a good read I'd recommend for everyone. Even if you think you don't have anyone that you haven't forgiven, I can probably guarantee that as you read through the book (and do the accompanying workbook pages) you will come to realize that you do have some hurts in your past that have shaped your thinking. And at the very least, the book will give you some insight into why people do what they do and why you react the way you do.
Alienated America isn't a quick read, but it is very interesting and worth the effort to understand what is shaping America into something most of us barely recognize these days.
From Amazon:
During the 2016 presidential campaign, Donald J. Trump proclaimed, “the American dream is dead,” and this message resonated across the country.
Why do so many people believe that the American dream is no longer within reach? Growing inequality, stubborn pockets of immobility, rising rates of deadly addiction, the increasing and troubling fact that where you start determines where you end up, heightening political strife—these are the disturbing realities threatening ordinary American lives today.
The standard accounts pointed to economic problems among the working class, but the root was a cultural collapse: While the educated and wealthy elites still enjoy strong communities, most blue-collar Americans lack strong communities and institutions that bind them to their neighbors. And outside of the elites, the central American institution has been religion
That is, it’s not the factory closings that have torn us apart; it’s the church closings. The dissolution of our most cherished institutions—nuclear families, places of worship, civic organizations—has not only divided us, but eroded our sense of worth, belief in opportunity, and connection to one another.
Listening
Leah is a major fan of both the Frozen and Troll movies. She loves singing and dancing along with the music from both. I don't mind because it's fun music! My favorite is Kristoff singing Lost in the Woods in Frozen 2. It's a great tribute to the soaring power ballads of the 80's.
Cooking
Chicken, stuffing, green beans, and gravy casserole in the Crock Pot today. Mashed potatoes cooked separately.
Covid
Is beginning to make itself known in the area again. Not that I know anyone who currently has it or have even heard anyone I know say they know someone. Still, some businesses are strongly suggesting masks. Most are not enforcing it, just asking you to comply. One grocery chain being the notable exception. They want you to wear a mask. Period. If you can't wear one for health reasons...they will be happy to provide a face shield. Point being, you'd better be wearing something over your face if you pass through their doors.
Last week the school said no masks. Yesterday the text came out saying the kids will have to wear them.
Our governor said earlier this year that he would never impose all those mandates again. As this proceeds we'll see how he handles it. And how people react.
Thinking
About all the people left behind in Afghanistan. Sheesh....could Biden's administration have handled our withdrawal any worse? What a cluster. Please, please keep the Americans who are still stuck there, the Afghani nationals who fought alongside our troops, the women, and the personnel who are still trying to get people out in your prayers.
Pray, also, for the people of Haiti. They have been devastated once again by a big earthquake. They hadn't really recovered from the last big one thanks to a corrupt government.
Loving
These two kids with all my heart.
Today's Agenda
No work. I rescheduled today's client for tomorrow due to all the rain. So, I plan to spend the day cleaning, doing laundry, and other odd jobs around the house. I do have to go out once to get one of Tim's prescriptions filled. I hope to find time to do some reading, as well.
That Tropical Storm is suppose to leave us with upwards of 5 inches of rain here in the Southern Tier of NY. Let's see, rumor mill at my employer is vaccines will be mandated, I shall refrain from furthur thoughts (you know my feelings), let's see, I gave up my teaching certificate because I refused anymore bullying about the vaccine and masks (both mandated)...its a sad sad world we are living in. I better leave it at that...We refuse to wear masks when we are out and about and will gladly leave a business that requires them. Since I am forced to wear one 8 hours a day, when I am off the clock, you can't make, period.
I am so glad you had a nice birthday, smiles. It sounds like you had a nice day, smiles.
The meal sounds Heavenly. Yum! Covid is the new State Religion with it's slave mask ritual and vax initiation. It's their god because they don't believe in Jesus Christ. One must comply or be punished, is the new mantra. It's only going to get worse because so many don't know what liberty means anymore thanks to years of taking God out of the schools and putting Socialism there instead. Sad, that. Y'all stay safe. Have a happy Hump Day! Blessings. xx
Glad you had a nice birthday & got a little escape. Yep, our schools said no masks & in the first week of school open, HUNDRESSSS are alreayd out with COVID - niceee. that book - interesting. From a Christian stand point, I really feel like the church is shutting its doors because they have really good at rejecting lately. I know that's not a popular view but I'm a Christian & the church has really struck me lately as something I dont know. There's supposed to be separation of church & state & I dont see that much anymore. & if I hear one more time "We dont fear this pandemic because we have God...." I cant - that is ridiculous. its that sort of thinking that turns an already hurting church into even more of an enemy to many. We are living in some crazy times - that's for sure. That Frozen 2 song.. LOL. I love Disney so much! Little kids give such a good excuse to watch it all over & over.
Hi Stacy - raining here today too - some flooding in some areas. I agree with you on Afghanistan. Our exit has been badly mishandled and I fear that many lives will be lost. So sad, and probably at least somewhat preventable. It's been a very bad foreign policy blunder, from what I can see. I am back to school and one of very few people wearing masks. I think I may get Covid before long because I am not sure how I can avoid it with large classes of unmasked students. I will get the 3rd shot as soon as I can and so will hubby and son. I want life to get back to normal ASAP and the more people that get vaccinated, the sooner that can happen. Our church is requiring masks again and our leadership is flat out telling people that the vaccinations are safe and effective - get them. Cute pictures of the grands. I need to get that book about forgiveness. Hope you are having a good day.
I commented because I like your blog…after commenting and reading the other comments, I deleted it…there is just no hope for some…keep writing…you are talented…
I don’t do social media…as an educator, we discovered too many negatives…however I have favorite blogs…yours has been one from day one…your family history has intrigued me and your positive attitude. Finding your father…I can relate…
It is great that you had such fun extended birthday celebration week! I agree with your Biden comments. Glad Fred missed us and hoping Grace does too - but sorry your are stuck with Fred. Covid has reared its ugly head again here in FL. Hoping to continue to steer clear of it. Hope things dry out a bit for you tomorrow. xo
Praying for our nation and especially for Afghanistan and Haiti right now. So very sad and devastating in every situation. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and life with us. I enjoyed reading along and am praying for your family to stay safe and healthy. Both books sound good. There is so much confusion in our nation today because of the total lack of real leadership, particularly any kind of Godly leadership. Conservative voices are being drowned out by the noise of the world and media. I spend a lot of time praying and staying away from the media as much as possible these days. I cannot deal with the stress, so find it better to just pray and continue living our days in peace with God and with one another as much as is possible. Blessings to you and yours.
Belated Happy Birthday! I am glad you had a nice birthday! My last few post were on my wedding and birthday. I agree with you on the Forgiving book. I did it with a group from my church on Zoom. All her books are good. My grands in public school are wearing mask. They say all kids wearing them makes it easier to wear. Only indoor, not at lunch or recess. I agree, the Afghanistan collapse is a mess. Haiti too. Seems like we are getting closer to end times and the enemy of this world is working hard and fast. On a light not, that is a cute picture of your grands!
The book, Forgiving What You Can't Forget - I should read. I still have major issues from my Mom and my sister that I know I need to free myself from but am having a hard time. I was thinking about seeing someone. It's like I need to get it all off my chest, once and for all.
Oh, Debby...do yourself a favor and get the book and a counselor. Lysa Terkeurst said something that was a real eye-opener for me. When we don't forgive (in our hearts...not to their face if they haven't asked for it and shown remorse and change) we are still giving them the control of our lives. Forgiving takes that power away.
