Saturday 9: I'm the Only One

Saturday 9: I'm the Only One (1993)

Join the fun here. Thanks to Sam for the music and questions.

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) Melissa Etheridge sings this song as though her heart is breaking. What's your favorite love song? Is it about falling in love, being in love, or losing love? I am not typically drawn to "love songs", but I absolutely adore the entire soundtrack to 1998's Parent Trap, which ranks in my top 5 most romantic movies of all time. I can't choose just one so here are a few.

L-O-V-E by Nat King Cole

This Will Be (An Everlasting Love) by Natalie Cole

I Love You for Sentimental Reasons by Linda Ronstadt

2) "I'm the Only One" is a favorite song of American Idol contestants, having been performed four different times. If we were to have a Saturday 9 karaoke night, what song would you do?  Yikes! Since anything I sing sounds like the caterwauling of an anxiety ridden cat, I wouldn't be participating. However, if my fairy godmother showed up and gave me a decent voice, I'd probably do something fun for everyone to sing along with like one of these.

Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond

Wagon Wheel by Darius Rucker

Piano Man by Billy Joel

3) A rocker at heart, Melissa Etheridge began her career in her teen years, playing with local country groups. Which do you enjoy more: country or rock?  I'm not locked into any one genre. I enjoy all kinds of music and move in and out of phases where I'm more in the mood for one than the other.

4) In 1985, Melissa sent a demo to Olivia Records, hoping for a record deal. She was rejected. Her debut CD was released in 1988 on the Island label and went gold. Tell us about a time you bounced back from professional adversity.  My boss at the nursing home was absolutely dreadful. I loved the job, but could not deal with her constant criticisms and put downs. I tried dropping back to part time hours so I would only have to work in the memory care unit and not see her, but then the home had financial problems and the pandemic came along and that wasn't going to remain the case...so I left. I took a little over a year off and now I have a fun job that I love. **Just to note, I recently learned the woman was fired.

5) In her personal life, Melissa has faced major challenges, including breast cancer and the death of her son. She credits music with helping her heal emotionally. What gives you strength?  My relationship with God through Jesus Christ.

6) Melissa is a vegetarian, so her diet emphasizes plant-based foods like fruits, grains, nuts and vegetables. What was your most recent meal? Would it qualify as vegetarian?  No vegetarians here, though sometimes in the summer when produce is fresh I will make a meat-free meal. Last night's meal was beef rice with ground beef, mushrooms, and a few veggies thrown in.

7) In 1993, the year this song was popular, a massive storm dropped a record 56" of snow in Mount Le Conte, TN. Have you done much shoveling this winter?  Not too much. We've only had one big snow so far. I remember the winter of '92-'93. We got hit hard here. Everyone talks about the blizzard of '93, but we were hit worse a few months earlier in December of '92. My town made the national news as the epicenter of a "perfect storm." We got more than 3 feet of snow in less than 24 hours. My husband was at work and his employer sent a crew and machines to help dig the town out. He didn't come home for 3 days. There was so much snow there was no place to put it. They had to put it in big trucks and haul it away to dump. Thankfully, our power stayed on because I was stranded at home with a 6 year old and a 4 month old baby.

8) One of the most popular movies of 1993 was A Few Good Men, starring Tom Cruise, Demi Moore and Jack Nicholson, who famously said, "You can't handle the truth!" What's the most recent movie you watched?  At the theater it was the new Spiderman movie with a client. At home it was Olympus Has Fallen which is one of Tim's favorites.

9) Random question: Dessert is on us! Describe your perfect ice cream sundae.  Vanilla ice cream, warm butterscotch topping, no whipped cream, but extra maraschino cherries.

  1. #2 Sweet Caroline you'll fit right in at a Red Sock game!
#7 In 1974 at college in Rochester NY we got a lake effect 50" snowfall followed by a couple of days later another 50" snowfall. I never again saw as much snow, over a 100 inches. It make it really hard driving at intersections.

    1. When we took the New England cruise we spent most evenings in the piano bar and the singer/player they had on the ship sang that song and Piano Man every night and the whole bar would sing along. It was a lot of fun. The day we were in Boston the Sox were playing but we didn't hear Sweet Caroline coming from the stadium. One hundred inches of snow! You win on that one. Holy cow.

  2. No vegetarians in this house either. Last night we had leftover meatloaf. I guess that was appropriate because while we were eating dinner, we heard that "Meatloaf" the rocker had passed. Your sundae sounds delicious. So glad you like your new job better than your last one. I started following/reading your blog when you had that awful, nasty boss. I felt sorry for you. Bad bosses can make life so tough. We had a very little snow storm Thursday night and got less than 1/2 an inch. It is all gone now. There is snow in the mountains, but no more snow in the forecast here until February. Sounds like quite a snowstorm you had in 93. I hope you have a great weekend. See you again soon. :-)

    1. I am sad about Meat Loaf. I really liked his music when I was in high school. Hearing one of his songs still takes me right back. So sorry you started reading when I was moaning about that particular boss. She really was an unpleasant woman...all while telling everyone constantly about what a wonderful Christian she was. I hope that one day she gets a clue before it is too late. Glad you are able to enjoy the snow from a bit of a distance.

  4. Ooooh, yes to the Butterscotch! Despite my poor singing voice, I'd be right there singing along when you put on Neil. Or Darius. Or Billy. Shoot, I love them all!

  6. Butterscotch topping! My husband would eat that, too. I didn't even think about butterscotch.

  7. March 1993 was the so-called Storm Of The Century. It spread all over the Eastern seaboard. I remember that because we had just moved onto this property and were still living in our towable RV. Thank heavens I like trees 'cause I had the land clearing people leave lots of them standing. This helped protect us from the horrible winds, ice and freezing temps that hit all our neighbors. We were self-contained in that little RV and did fine as power was out for a couple of days. Right after that we started on the house construction. And, the rest is history. *lol*
I watch movies every day on YouTube or DVD. Watching one right now called, "When The Clock Strikes" (1961). I'm really into film noir. Haven't watched a modern movie since the 90s or so except for one about the Apostle Paul at the theatre. It was pretty good.
    Blessings. xx

    1. Yes, they called it the storm of the century here, too, but we only got 2 feet of snow in one day that time. The earlier one left a much bigger impression. Still, I bet it made for quite the "adventure" in a camper! I like all kinds of movies, including the old black and white stuff. It just depends on my mood. Yes, The Apostle Paul was a good movie. I bought it when it came out. The depictions of Rome sure were an eye opener. That's when I learned where the term Roman Candle came from...it was what they called the Christians on the walls along the city streets that they set on fire. It's no wonder those folks were so hungry for the gospel!

  8. I love Sweet Caroline. My Mom and Dad were big Neil Diamond fans. He would always sing "Cracklin Rosie" to her when it came on. Her name is Rose, lol. I always thought it was so sweet.

    2. Yeah, I'm trying not to gloat, but I am glad someone finally recognized how awful she was and did something about it. She had no business working with the residents.

  10. Can I sing my duet with you? I love Sweet Caroline and Piano Man too. I can carry a tune, just cannot sing really high.
I am so glad to hear that lady is not with the nursing home anymore. She didn't have the skills to work around others.
I totally forgot about butterscotch! I love butterscotch. I probably love it more than what I posted. It is hard to fine here for some reason. Loved your answers!
    Have a nice weekend. ♥

    1. How about a trio with Myra? That ought to be quite the show! Ha!
I'm glad, too, about the old boss. I'm trying not to gloat about it, but I am glad she isn't around the residents any longer. She was just not kind to them, either.

  11. I enjoyed the videos you posted. A Few Good Men was a good movie. I hope to see Redeeming Love with some of my friends this week. Did you ever read the book? I have read several of her books. I remember you posting about your old job. You got out just in time. Butterscotch reminds me of Sees suckers. I loved those as kids. Enjoy your weekend!

  12. I remember you posting about that former boss of yours. It's sad that she steered you away from a job you enjoyed. And then there's karma ...

When we order our sundaes, I'll tell them to give you my cherry if I can have your whipped cream.

  13. Bosses can make or break your experience at a job, so they can. I'm glad that she got a clue..
Really lovely Music video line up! It was great to listen to. So, I see that Darius Rucker plays a Gibson. Whoot!
