Books, Books, Books!

Mom and I had a good time on Saturday. She picked me up at 9:00 and after running a few errands here in town, we hit the road for the used book sale at the West Newton public library. I didn't actually pay attention to the times, but I think it's about 45 minutes away. It's a tiny library, but very nice and the staff is friendly and helpful. In order to comply with Covid-19 rules the sale was held outside in the parking lot. Fortunately, it was a sunny day and cool, but not cold. Many of you expressed envy when I mentioned the sale in my Saturday post so I thought I'd share what I found with you.

I don't usually buy new romances, but I will grab up some fun sounding ones at a used book sale. These look like fun and bonus...one's a Christmas romance! It's almost that time of the year.

I think we can all agree David Cassidy's autobiography will be an interesting read, Barbara Delinsky's books are usually very well written, and I grabbed up Lords of the Earth because it was required reading in one of my college English classes...it has always stuck with me. I want to see if I've remembered it accurately all these years.

As someone who enjoys writing and reading, I couldn't pass these up.

This is the inside of Grammar Gremlins. On the left-facing pages there are words or phrases that can be tricky. On the right are tips for proper usage.

I'm really looking forward to the first book pictured. The tag line of "A Memoir of Good Food and Bad Boyfriends" grabbed my interest. Flipping through it I saw that it also includes quite a few recipes. Another Christmas romance and finally one of Robyn Carr's Virgin River series. I love the show of the same name on Netflix. When I realized it was based on books, I started picking them up whenever I come across them.

I've always loved Carol Burnett, so a copy of her memoir was an easy choice. I've only read one other Jen Hatmaker book and I wasn't a fan, but I know so many women who LOVE her books so I thought I'd give this one a chance. Classic Snoopy...how could I not?

I also picked up a couple of cookbooks. One is all pork recipes and the other is the one Jerry Seinfeld's wife published a few years back about getting kids to eat healthier. A couple of Dr. Seuss classics, a pop-up version of The Little Engine that Could and a beautifully embossed Tinkerbell book rounds out my haul.

Here they are stacked up with (most of) the rest of the books in my waiting-to-be-read pile.

Ah, a big pile of books waiting in the wings makes me a happy girl!

  1. Wow! Looks like you made quite a haul at the book sale! They sound interesting and fun. So we know what you'll be doing on the long dark nights of winter! That's when I do most of my reading, when it starts getting dark so early and the evenings just seem so long, and I don't watch TV much so reading is what I do. Enjoy your books, but don't forget to write to us and let us know what else is going on!!

    1. I can't remember which one of her books I read, but I didn't like it at all. I'm willing to give her another chance, though.

  6. Now that's what I'd call a Treasure Trove! Grammar Gremlins sounds like a fun little reference. I'm trying to shed my rep as a Grammar Nazi; some days are better than others. :)

    1. I'm sort of a Grammar Nazi with myself, but I overlook it in others...unless it slips through editing into a book or newspaper.

  7. Wow, that is quite the haul! I love going to book sales. Guess what? I know where West Newton is! Have driven there a few times in my life---off 51 south, towards Belle Vernon, right? I am a grammar nazi too. I really cringe when people say things like "I should have went with him." I'm thinking, "gone, the word is gone, not went." It really is amazing how many people have poor grammar. In my mind wrong grammar isn't a whole lot different than saying 2 plus 2 equals 5.

    1. Yes, you are right about West Newton! I didn't get there from 51, though. We drove down 136.

  8. Looks like you struck a book goldmine! I use to be a big time book reader. But Bible journaling and crafting have taken over and I love it. I am thinking of reading the Left Behind Series again. I sure miss Disneyland and shared a few pictures at my blog.

    1. I read the Left Behind Series when it came out. I enjoyed the first few books, but then I thought they weren't written as well. They felt like they were rushed to get them out on the market...but I read them all. All that time invested, I had to stick with it until Jesus returned! I saw about all the people Disneyland laid off. Wow. I can't help but wonder if life as we knew it will ever come back the same.

  9. I am sorry to be late getting to blogs but WOW that is quite a stack of new books to dive into!! Keep us posted on how you like them as you finish them! Seeing your comment above about the Left Behind series. I felt the same and quite after six or eight... can't remember. I did not finish them all. Have a happy week!
