Saturday 9: Papa, Can You Hear Me?

Saturday 9: Papa, Can You Hear Me? (1984)

This song was chosen in honor of Father's Day. Hear it here.

1) The song begins with a prayer to "God, our Heavenly Father." Do you often pray?  Yes, I do. Several times a day. Some prayers are only a sentence or two long, so that is possible.

2) This song is from the movie Yentl. Set in the early 1900s, it tells the story of a Polish girl determined to receive a religious education, even though the custom of the day banned girls from studying the Talmud. What subject do you wish you knew more about?  History. I love learning about the past and I doubt I will ever think I know enough about it.

3) It took Streisand more than 15 years to get Yentl made. Studios initially rejected the project, telling her that audiences no longer want to see musicals. Then, because it centered on Judaism, she was told it was "too ethnic." But Yentl was a success at the box office, becoming one of the most profitable movies of the year -- and since Barbra was producer, director and star, she enjoyed those profits. Tell us about a time you're glad you stuck with something. There are probably several times, but the first that popped into my mind was learning how to drive a bus and getting my commercial driver's license. It was rather intimidating at first, but I spent 16 years driving school buses. I worked with some great people, met some wonderful families, and had some fun adventures during those years.

4) The movie, and this song, were so popular that they earned a parody on The Simpsons. (See it here.)  That video has had more than 250,000 views. Before the Yentl parody, what's the last YouTube video you watched?  The one of "Nightbirde" from this year's America's Got Talent.

5) Barbra Streisand's father died suddenly, the result of complications after an epileptic seizure, just after her first birthday. He held degrees in both English Literature and Education and was a school superintendent. Do you know anyone who made a career in education?  I know many who did.

6) Sam's own father wasn't an educator, but he is crazy about the local library. He's there so much the librarians greet him by name. Do you have a library card?  No. I have to admit I haven't checked out a book in years. Probably not since my kids were still in school.

7) For family barbecues, Sam's dad proudly dons his "Kiss the Chef" apron and mans the Weber. What's the last thing you cooked on the grill?  I rarely grill anything...that's my hubby's job. He did chicken last weekend.

8) He takes his grilling very seriously and jealously guards his marinade recipe. Do you have a recipe you're willing to share this morning?
Sure. I told you I don't really do the grilling around here, but I do make these ribs once in a while. They are amazing! They are mostly done in the oven, though, and then my hubby finishes them off on the grill. I shared the recipe several years ago with photos. You can view it here.

9) Sam's father hates it when his daughter swears. What's the latest curse word you used? (It's OK, we don't blush easily.)  I don't swear very often. I try not to swear at all, but admit that sometimes a smashed toe or finger will elicit a word or two. Usually, the "s" word. I don't use the heavy duty words or any that use God's name.

Thanks as always to Sam @ the Saturday 9 for the music and questions!

  1. Hi Stacy, I will have to check out your recipe. I have not been to the library since summer of 2019. I do have books I need to donate there. They are just sitting in my garage since I don't have room for them. Have a great weekend!

    1. Once my kids weren't around, I stopped going to the library because I, personally, am HORRIBLE at returning books on time. I always end up owing a bunch of late fees. I just buy lots of used books, either at the library's sales or while thrifting...and then I donate them to the libray for their used sale the next year.

  2. I used to go to the library almost every couple of weeks to check out a stack of books to read. Then the pandemic hit and the library was closed. Even tho they are open now, I haven't gotten back in the habit. Sadly, I don't seem to want to read as much as I did before. I hope I get back into it again someday, but for now I mostly read here in blogland and then hubby and I have been watching some shows on TV together, so that has taken the place of reading. I hope you have a happy Father's Day weekend. Our youngest son does the grilling here, but I think we are going out to a local BBQ place for lunch on Sunday instead of cooking. It's too hot to grill...

    1. I don't know what we are doing tomorrow. The weather forecast is for light rain all day. Church is to be a baptism service and picnic at a local park...think I'm passing on that since no one else would go with me and picnic in the rain? No thanks. Hubby had wanted to work on the pool deck, but that's probably out, too. Might just be another Sunday for us other than Megan and the kiddos paying a visit.

  3. #3 -- I can see why that would be intimidating. Bus drivers have such an impact, on both their passengers and everyone else on the road. So getting your license and being a good driver is quite an accomplishment.

    1. Oh gee...I was just thinking about the size of the bus and actually driving it. I might have run screaming for the hills if I had thought of all that other stuff back in the beginning. It's probably a good thing I was blissfully ignorant back then. lol

  4. I've been asking my husband to find a good ribs recipe. He does all the grilling too. Well, all the cooking, actually. I can open a can and heat things. *lol* Anyway, it's gotten too expensive to buy anything pre-cooked anymore. I'll go check your recipe. If it has sugar, we can substitute something that doesn't spike my blood sugar.
You're a bus driver too?! Wow. You can do anything! I can drive a double clutch transmission but never got a certification for it. I love driving anything. And I can ride almost any motorcycle around. So, there's that.
I had an "oppsy" yesterday when the dog we're babysitting BARKED really loud near my ear. I'm bad about the darn word (but not darn) still. Working on it with God's help. My adopted father spewed forth all kinds of filth and anger during his time on earth. I learned it all from him and I'm trying to unlearn all of it! It's not an admirable trait to be able to "swear".
    Blessings. xx

    1. Nope, no sugar in the recipe unless you use a sauce that has lots of it. It seems to me there was a recipe for a homemade sauce that went along with that recipe that I made the first time I cooked those ribs. I don't remember if it had sugar, but only part of us liked it. It had chilies in it and was kind of spicy.
I can drive, but I let my CDL go after I left bus driving behind. I can't drive a motorcycle. I don't think I've ever even been on one.
Nope, swearing's not a good trait and I had to have God help me give it up, too. Sadly, a good whack up against the bedpost seems to bring them to the top.

    1. I was in my 20's, too, Gloria. I had my infant son in the backseat when I took my test!

  6. Interesting post. We haven't been grilling much but just got a new grill last week - that will mostly be for Josh and I as Charly doesn't care for grilled foods. I do have library cards and have lately been checking out more books, but I prefer to have my own books to read. I feel guilty about the expense of books (which really isn't much) because I get most of my books at thrift stores or used through Amazon. I hope you have a good weekend and that Tim has a Happy Father's Day! See you again soon!

    1. I like to get my books that way, too. I like to make too many notes and mark up my non-fiction ones. The library kind of frowns on that! lol

  7. I admire bus drivers so much. I would not want to do it. You were a blessing to so many. I can tell you that honestly right now. I did not forget my bus driver.
I walk around talking to God too. I ask Him to help me find things all of the time and every single time He does. Loved your answers! Have a nice weekend.

  8. I could not drive a bus. Anytime I am around children, I become sick with whatever virus they're carrying. I admire people who can put up with all of that noise.

  9. Because I struggle to back out of a grocer's parking place, I think you're pretty amazing handling that big bus. Before moving here, Tom and I were regulars at the Public Library ... for a while, I even harbored plans to be a librarian when I grew up. (How pathetic is that? LOL)
Yes, I enjoy chit-chatting with God throughout day. Even if it's just a simple 'thank you.'

  10. Going back to check out the recipe. Thanks for sharing it with us! Bless you for driving a school bus for 16 years. It is not something I could do - not the driving part but putting up with the kids part. Bless you! Happy weekend! xo
